With whispers of anticipation echoing through the corridors of Joe P. Eblen Intermediate, students eagerly awaited the chance to meet the creator of their favorite tales.
The entire school dove deep into the pages of “Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe” by Jo Watson Hackl. This book tells the story of a young girl who sets off on an adventure with twists and turns along the way in order to discover who she is. The One School - One Book initiative helps build a community of readers across different grade levels. Students and staff saw firsthand the impact this program made on their school.
“Reading together helps students work on active listening skills, build vocabulary, and develop a positive attitude about books and learning,” said Media Coordinator Kara Emery. “Our school was excited about reading this fun book and being a part of the program. Once our Title I department was able to purchase a copy of the book for every student and staff member, we began making our plans for our month of reading and activities.”
Last fall Ms. Emery attended a conference where she met Ms. Hackl, who provided resources and grant opportunities to go along with this initiative.
“Teachers recorded chapter readings, and after each one was played students answered trivia questions for a chance to win prizes from local businesses,” Ms. Emery explained. “Other activities included a ‘Tour of Doors’ in which many homerooms decorated their doors in accordance with the book.”
During the visit with Ms. Hackl, the school participated in a presentation with the author followed by a Q&A, meet and greet with students, book signings and plenty of photo opportunities.
