Student Device User Information

The Buncombe County Schools 1:1 device initiative allows students access to educational applications, educational web-based tools, and many other educational resources.  All users are expected to follow Buncombe County Schools’ Technology Responsible Use policy and Internet Safety policy (found on BCS schools’ website) as well as all other state and federal laws, board policies and school rules.

Every student will be assigned a BCS 1:1 device by their school.  Failure to turn in the device on the last day of attendance will result in the student being charged the full replacement cost.  Students will be allowed to take their device home (with signed parent agreement on file with homeroom teacher) during the school year when needed for an assignment.  Power adapters will NOT be sent home.  Students are required to return the device to school the next day.  Devices DO NOT stay at home.

Students are responsible for the general care and proper use of the issued device per BCS schools’ and Eblen Intermediate policies.  Students who violate the policies may be subject to disciplinary action, which may include the loss of BCS 1:1 device privileges as determined by the teacher, media specialist and/or administration.

Students MUST report if their device is damaged, lost, stolen, or not working properly to their teacher, media specialist or administrator as soon as possible.  There is NO annual fee charged for students use of a BCS 1:1 device. However, if a device or power adapter is lost or damaged, as determined by administrator and technology, the student will be responsible for the cost to replace or repair the device.

 General Care:

  • Always place food or drink far away from the device.
  • Always carefully attach power adapter.
  • Never lift the device by the screen.
  • Device MUST remain free of writing, drawing, etching, or stickers that are not the property of BCS or Eblen Intermediate.Never remove or deface BCS or manufacturer labels.
  • Under no circumstances should the device be left in any unsupervised areas including the school grounds, cafeteria, bathrooms, hallways, gyms or any other unsupervised area.Devices found in these areas will be taken to the Media Center.
  • Never loan your device to another student.
  • Heavy objects should never be placed on top of the device.
  • Device screen can be easily damaged if subjected to heavy objects and rough treatment.
  • Do not poke the screen with anything that will mark or scratch the screen surface.
  • Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (pens, pencils or disks).

 Content Filter:

  • BCS utilizes an Internet content filter that follows the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All BCS 1:1 devices, regardless of physical location (including home) and Internet connection, will have Internet activity filtered. To the extent possible, the filter monitors all internet sites that students attempt to access and blocks inappropriate sites; however, it must be noted that no filtering software is 100% accurate. Parents are still urged to monitor their child’s internet access while at home.
  • When necessary, BCS may review student use of devices to ensure the safety of students, staff, and BCS infrastructure.

 User Settings and Preferences:

  • Inappropriate media may not be used as device backgrounds or themes. Examples of inappropriate media include, but are not limited to, the presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drugs, racist imagery, gang-related symbols or pictures. The use of any inappropriate media will result in disciplinary action.
