Joe P. Eblen Intermediate
"Home of the Warriors"

In
June 2008, the Buncombe County Board of Education approved the addition
of an intermediate school in the Erwin district which would open in
2011. This decision was made to ease overcrowding at Erwin Middle and
the Erwin District elementary schools. At the May 2010 Board of
Education Meeting, the new intermediate school in the Erwin district was
named, Joe P. Eblen Intermediate, in honor of the long time president
of Biltmore Oil Company and for his contributions throughout the
community through his charitable works. Eblen Intermediate opened its
doors in January 2012.
Eblen Intermediate is a Title I school.
We serve approximately 735 fifth and sixth grade students including 3
intensive intervention classrooms.
Also, as one of the two LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) schools in Buncombe
County Schools, our LEED goal is to create a healthy environment that
supports education through teacher, student, and staff performance. Some
of the site features include solar thermal panels, day-lighting
monitors in the classrooms, a cool roof membrane, an outdoor classroom
with amphitheater, rainwater cistern and garden, green screen trellises,
storm water filtration, and LED site lighting. Eblen Intermediate is
equipped with numerous technology tools, including interactive boards in
every classroom and mobile laptops in a wireless environment. Other
electronic devices include: electronic readers, student response
systems, a media retrieval system, and small video cameras. The focus is
to prepare students through an integrated approach of weaving global
skills, leadership & character traits, individual goals &
accountability, problem-solving, and life skills within the common core
and essential standards, in order to maximize the level of overall
achievement in every student.
